Social Media Risks and Vulnerabilities: Intrusions and Fraud

A Literature Review

August 2013 – Dec 2013

I and my teammates (Eloise Bowers and Alejandro Jaramillo) explored the subject of Social Media and its risks and vulnerabilities. The development and increased usage of social media has brought about a lot of revolution and transformation to relationships and life in general. Social media revolution, just like other revolutions has brought about both the good, the bad and the ugly. We however focus mainly on the risk of intrusion and fraud.

From our study, we were able to come up with 3 main elements in relation to intrusion and fraud, which are: 1) Attacker, who is the intruder; 2) Victim of these attacks and 3) Environment, which covers all aspects social media and the characteristics of social media that makes it prone to intrusion and fraud.

We critically analyze social media intrusion across 3 elements, describing these elements and their characteristics, explaining the process of intrusion and fraud, the different types of intrusion and attacks and also describing techniques of mitigating such attacks. Sometimes, intrusion doesn’t culminate into fraud, so we define the line between intrusion and fraud. We also make general recommendations for social media users on how to protect themselves from being victims of intrusion and fraud.
